BRIEF HISTORY OF MAINLAND HOSPITAL, YABA, LAGOS

The Mainland Hospital, Yaba was established in 1930 as an Infectious Disease Hospital by the Colonial Government to cater to infectious diseases such as Cholera, measles, chicken pox, tuberculosis and all other infectious diseases that could occur at that time. Thus, popularly known as Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba (IDH, Yaba). The whole vision was to isolate patients with infectious diseases and prevent transmission to close associates and relatives.

It was initially a hospital of 80-bed capacity and the wards were named A to F. Other structures are the administrative block, the medical director’s office block, conference centre, laundry block, the accounts department block, the emergency/OPD building, the pharmacy block, kitchen block, engineering block, Laboratory block, chest clinic block, X-ray block and some residential quarters.

The hospital was managed by the colonial masters until independence when it was handed over to the Western region Government and the mission and vision continued i.e, treatment and admission of infectious diseases. However, the hospital was transferred to Lagos State Government by the Federal Government a few years after the creation of Lagos State when Mobolaji Johnson was the Governor of Lagos state.

The hospital became more involved in the treatment of tuberculosis as soon as Lagos State Government took over and less of other diseases except when there was an outbreak of any of the other infectious diseases.  This continued until 2004 when the GHAIN HIV/VCT centre was inaugurated in IDH. Thus, the hospital became a referral centre for HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis.

The name of the hospital was changed from Infectious disease hospital, Yaba to Mainland Hospital, Yaba in 2005 to downplay the stigma of HIV/AIDS. The hospital is one of the foremost GHAIN-supported ARVS treatment /VCT centre and has an HIV clinic that runs every Tuesday and Thursday. While the chest clinic runs Monday to Friday.

The hospital started the treatment of Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in April 2012 and a complex which is a 40-bed capacity has 40 patients on admission receiving daily injections and drugs for eight months. Thus, the hospital is now at a 110-bed capacity hospital.

It is worthy of note that the patients seen in Mainland Hospital are patients from lowly backgrounds and most times are not able to buy their drugs and pay for necessary investigations.
